On Enjoying the Moment and Fighting FOMO

As the weather is up (and this pollen is up) I find myself balancing work, wellness, social and solitude to design a well-balanced life, figuring out how to do all the things in flow. As I get older, it feels like there’s never enough time or weekends to get it all done, but with the right design I’ve found some paths to up my joy and quiet my fomo. Here’s some of best practices on seizing the day and getting the most of out my time.

Make the moments matter. There’s so many quotes about living your life versus just being alive and I believe that the difference is in your ability to appreciate the moment. Loneliness and solitude look similar just as being active doesn’t designate progress, the intention you pour into your moments make all the difference. I go out a lot compared to most people, but I value my solitude more than ever which also has made my moments with people more meaningful.

Decide what’s the priority. The spring and summer create weekends that are littered with events in a limited amount of hours. I’ve made it a practice to pick my points and release myself from the FOMO. The streets don’t need you as much as you’d think and you’ll see those people in the next room on another day and if you want to see someone specifically, make plans with them. I make time to rest, see friends, visit family, do philanthropic work and date with thought and intention.

Say yes more than no, and say no faster. These two are mantras I’ve adopted over the years to guide my thoughts, I say yes more than no when I’m indifferent and something doesn’t contrast with my values which helps me get to decision points faster. If my gut is telling me it’s a no, I’ll say no fast and freely to release myself from feeling obligated too show up to everything. These practices make it much easier to arrive at a yes or no, without feeling guilty about showing up or opting out.
